The purpose of the "Design Team Approach" is to achieve the best building possible in every way. Because our energy resources are limited and growing more unaffordable every day, our plans, specifications, and construction practices today are going to influence tomorrow and the future. Sustainability, in terms of energy resources, environmental quality, and personal/business economic security, is the ultimate goal of using the design team approach. A sustainable building may also be referred to as "Green", "Environmentally Responsible", "Bioclimatic" or "Economically Optimized". The following links provide more on this subject.

The design team approach was found invaluable on the White House energy retrofit! They say "The integrated design process that led to the recommendations for Greening the White House is itself an important tool that can easily be employed in considering how to improve the performance of any facility. Interactive design is fostered by assembling all the relevant players in the design field (architects, lighting designers, mechanical engineers, utilities, interior designers, water efficiency experts, etc.) along with onsite managers and the people responsible for the on-going maintenance for the buildings, at the outset of a project, to discuss and design across boundaries. Having all the experts work together can lead to serendipitous discoveries that are often overlooked in a more conventional and linear design process."
